The RACES MCARS team was asked in 2003 to participate in the pilot class of CERT in Marshall County Alabama. We were one of the first classes in the state. Through the hard work and dedication of many of the emergency professionals, this class taught a wide scope of topics to better prepare the student in times of emergency. Since MCARS purpose is to support the EMA, participants felt that the additional training would give a good incite into a real disaster. It allows the radios operators to better understand the needs, responsibilities and urgency in times of disaster. It also, allows the radio operators to work safely in these situations

What is CERT

CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and doing the GREATEST GOOD for the GREATEST NUMBER. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference.

The training topics covered were: Disaster Awareness, Disaster Fire Safety Techniques, Disaster Medical Operation, Light Search and Rescue Operations, Team Organizations and Management, Disaster Psychology, Terrorism and CERT, and the final test was a Simulated Disaster Drill. This is a hands on training as well as a formal class room approach to learning.

Everyone learned something. Drilled into the class was that safety and preparedness start with yourself. Taking care of yourself, your family and your neighbors are all at the top of the list. This truly is the way to help in times of emergency. By helping yourself and others.
